GA 252 | Standard Work in the Office with Steve Ansuini

I loved Steve’s comment and typed up a note for myself that might help other listeners. You can hear what I copied down from Ron’s interview (love this podcast btw). My quotes below come from the 4-minute to 9-minute mark. I am a person of faith and an avid booster of everything LEAN. Enjoy.

He was U.S. Toyota employee #43 (1980’s), he spoke on how important relationships and culture were/are at Toyota.

These are the 5 penned precepts/tenants/principals written by the original Toyota family in/about October, 1935. These are long-standing precepts, Toyoda and Ohno used before putting TPS together. These were the tenants they worked within. Steve said they came to light, even at Toyota, when the TBP, Toyota Business Practices initiative started in 2000. I hope I got all that correct.

1) Always be faithful to your duties, thereby contributing to the company, and to the overall good.
2) Always be studious and creative striving to stay ahead of the times.
3) Always be practical and avoid frivolousness.
– He added a story of quality circles proposing big dollar solutions. In one case, a $150,000 solution was sent back for more study two times, the final iteration had a zero cost.
– All companies are driven by budgets and budget reductions, sometimes you need to make those expenditures but we should not be doing it frivolously. We should be getting a good grasp of the situation and going through the PDCA process properly to avoid frivolousness.
4) Always strive to build a home like atmosphere at work that is warm and friendly. This is how important relationships and culture is/are in the Toyota culture.
5) Always have respect for God and always be Grateful. Be grateful and help others.
