Kudos to American Airlines and DFW International Airport

By Ron Pereira Updated on January 13th, 2011

american-airlines.jpgamerican-airlines.jpgI just had the best experience here at the DFW International airport.

I pulled up to the drop-off zone, kissed my wife and kids good-bye, grabbed my bags, headed to the Executive Platinum check in line (one of the benefits of frequent traveling).  So far about 2 minutes have passed.

Check in Angel

I stood in the relatively short line for about 15 seconds when a lady called out to see if anyone needed assistance at the little self check in terminal.

Since I am traveling to Germany today I didn’t think I would be able to use this machine… so I asked her.  She said, “no problem” and proceeded to check me in at the self check in terminal.  We are up to around 5 minutes now since saying good-bye to my family.

Awesome X ray

I then proceeded to security where I moved through the line quickly only to be asked to go to the X-ray machine along the wall (terminal D around gate 30).  The lady also said not to worry about taking anything out of my bags.  Are you kidding me?  Apparently they are testing some new machines.  I like these new machines – a lot!

I stuff my bags into the machine and wait for them to get inspected.  About a minute later I am done and walking to buy a bottle of water.  Let’s call it a total of 7 minutes so far.

What a Start!

I get my bottle of water… head to my gate where a nice man who notices me looking for a power outlet motions me towards him.  He moves his bags and says I can share the outlet with him.  What a nice person.

I turn my laptop on and wait for it to boot up.  I see a wireless signal and then my Boingo wireless thing pops up and asks me if I want to connect.  I say yes.  I am connected in seconds.

I login to my WordPress account and begin writing this article.  I will be conservative and call the total time from saying good-bye to family to writing this article was around 15 minutes.

What a great start to this trip.  Speak to you again from across the pond!

    Travel safe!

DFW is a pretty “lean” airport on the way in… you can park within walking distance of the gate and the security lines are spread out instead of funneling everyone through one huge line. Not many airports with that design.

Now, getting bags on the arrival side is a mess and the traffic pattern around the terminals (poor signage and lanes that end randomly) are a different story…

Man, totally agree on the bags aspect!

There is nothing worse than finally getting home… excited to get in the car to go see your family… and then having to stand there for 30 minutes waiting for your bags.

Maybe they have done some kaizen since last time I got my bags… let’s see!
