The Making of the 2010 World Cup Soccer Ball

By Ron Pereira Updated on April 24th, 2023

I am coaching my daughter’s U7 soccer team this year and, as such, have been reading as much as I can about the game.  I was a wrestler growing up… never played soccer in my life!

Anyhow, I came across this video on how the 2010 World Cup soccer balls were manufactured.  It seems to be a mix of high-tech automation and craft manufacturing.

Watch the video. How would you change this manufacturing process if you were in charge of it?

It seems like a solid process although they do quite a bit of touching with their hands and I wonder how consistent each operator is?

What is the most common % of inventory? Are they making what the customer asked for?
How long does each process take?
How long does the product wait for the next step of the process?
The video shows flow, but what is the reality of flow through out the process?
    Are the operators safe?
Does each process have a goal?

Have something to say?
