Why Obtain a Gemba Academy Certification?

Where Do You Even Begin?

Have you ever stopped to think, “I have all these problems at work, but I don’t know where to begin”? This is often when people begin to explore the benefits of Lean certification.

Have you asked yourself what you need to learn? Do you know which Lean tools to use and when to use them? More importantly, are you confident applying them the right way?

Learning Without Application

Maybe you have attended Lean seminars, workshops, or even conferences. However, applying Lean in your organization still feels unclear. You want to solve problems and drive change, but the path forward is not obvious.

This Is a Normal Starting Point

These questions are normal. In fact, most Lean practitioners start this way. I remember my first experience, about 26 years ago, working with a sensei. At that time, I was learning many tools and trying to memorize them. The goal seemed simple: know which one to use when problems came up.

The Missing Piece, Structure

Back then, finding people with Lean knowledge was not easy. In addition, a clear learning structure was missing. No one guided you step by step. Instead, there was no path that started with fundamentals and built toward more advanced tools.

Because of this, connecting the tools and approaches took years. Most of that learning came through trial and error. Along the way, I made many mistakes. However, each one became an opportunity to improve.

A Real Story from the Gemba

I remember two Lean Practitioner candidates at Gemba Academy. One had over 20 years of experience, while the other was new to Lean and new to a supervisory role.

During our first onboarding call, both shared similar concerns. They said they joined the program because their company asked them to. At the same time, they believed Lean would not work in their organization. They had tried before and saw no results.

One of them told me he did not need the training. He had practiced Lean for years. However, he had never gone through a structured program. Because of that, he believed this might not help. Instead, his main goal was to get a certification for his resume.

What Changed Through the Process

Things began to change once they started structured training and coaching. For the first time, they were able to sustain improvements. This included 5S and Kaizen efforts that did not last in the past.

Gradually, new processes and tools became clearer. Many of these had not been fully understood before. With practice, they began applying them in real situations. In addition, feedback helped them adjust and improve their approach.

This is a key reason to pursue certification. It is not just about learning concepts. Rather, it is about applying them in the real world. It also includes regular coaching from an experienced mentor.

Over time, this builds real capability.
