Why Attend a Lean Coffee Chat?

A Different Kind of Meeting

Have you ever attended a meeting where one person talked the entire time, the agenda felt forced, and you left wondering why you were even there? Lean Coffee conversations are different.

In Lean, we often see meetings as a waste of time unless they are well structured, focused, and time-limited. Lean Coffee Chats are among the rare meetings that create real value for participants.

In a typical 90-minute Lean Coffee session, the presenter may only speak for 10 minutes. This forces the presenter to think carefully about the topic and how to communicate key ideas clearly and concisely. The remaining time is dedicated to discussion, reflection, and learning from others.

Because these meetings follow a structured format and standard agenda, everyone has an opportunity to contribute. Participants learn to communicate meaningful ideas concisely while remaining respectful of others in the room.

Learning Through Real Experience

The primary goal of a Lean Coffee Chat is to learn from real experiences using real workplace examples. Some of the best learning happens through conversation and reflection with others who face similar challenges.

These discussions create opportunities for people to openly share what is working, what is not working, and what they are currently struggling with inside their organizations. Participants gain fresh perspectives, practical ideas, and insights they can immediately apply in their own environments.

Unlike traditional presentations that focus only on theory, Lean Coffee Chats create space for honest dialogue and collaborative problem-solving.

Building Relationships and Community

These monthly gatherings also create an environment for networking and collaboration. The topics are selected by the group, allowing people to discuss issues that truly matter to them and seek help from others with different experiences and perspectives.

One of the greatest strengths of a Lean Coffee Chat is the ability to build meaningful professional relationships naturally and without pressure. Over time, participants develop trust, strengthen their networks, and create connections that might not have happened otherwise.

I remember organizing my first Lean Coffee Chat in Michigan while serving on the board of the Michigan Lean Consortium. Only three people attended the first session. Over time, the group slowly grew to around 25 participants.

We intentionally kept the sessions small because once the group becomes too large, the sense of community begins to disappear, and not everyone has an opportunity to contribute during the 90-minute discussion.

Over the years, many participants shared how valuable those monthly conversations became for them. First, they built relationships and expanded their professional network. Second, they found a safe environment where they could openly discuss their challenges and receive support, ideas, and encouragement from others.

Why In-Person Conversations Still Matter

Today, Lean Coffee Chats are popular in many cities, and during COVID, many groups learned to host them successfully virtually.

While virtual sessions can still provide value, I personally believe these conversations are most powerful when done in person. Lean is ultimately about people, and people naturally connect better through face-to-face interaction than through screens or phones.

In-person discussions create stronger engagement, deeper conversations, and more meaningful relationships.

Strengthening the Lean Community in Texas

This week, Gemba Academy launched its first Lean Coffee Chat in the Dallas area. Our goal is to strengthen the Lean community across Dallas and throughout Texas.

Like any new initiative, beginnings are not easy. Building a community takes time, consistency, and commitment. However, we are excited to create an environment where people who share similar Lean beliefs and ways of thinking can come together to learn, reflect, and grow.

A Lean Coffee Chat is not about having all the answers. It is about creating an environment where people can think together, learn from one another, and grow through shared experiences.

Whether you are new to Lean or have years of experience, these conversations can help expand your thinking and strengthen your continuous improvement journey.
