In my opinion customised manufacturing will only be successful if communication between customer and service provider will still be done in a face-to-face manner. Many customers for customised products, I believe, still would prefer actually seeing the product or sample of the product in making judgment before committing to it, otherwise there will be a lot of dissatisfaction as the actual product did not come out according to their expectations.
I also believe that In a customised manufacturing process the more that you will need to apply the Lean management approaches.
